TikTok Shadowban: How to Check It, What It Means and How to Fix It
TikTok doesn't use the word shadowban. What it does have is For You feed eligibility: posts, and sometimes whole accounts, can be made ineligible for recommendation, and TikTok says it notifies you when an account is. Open Account check in TikTok Studio first. If it's clean, a view drop is more likely a content or retention issue.
When views fall off a cliff, it's natural to assume the worst. Before you delete anything or take a week off, get the facts. The rest of this guide shows where to look, how to read what you find, and what to do in each case. Platform facts link to TikTok's own support pages and newsroom.
What People Call a Shadowban vs. What TikTok Actually Does
| What creators say | What TikTok's own pages describe |
|---|---|
| "TikTok secretly hid my account." | Accounts that repeatedly post content unsuitable for the For You feed can be made ineligible for recommendation. Their posts won't appear in the For You feed and are harder to find in search (TikTok Support). |
| "They never tell you." | TikTok says it notifies you in your inbox and on your profile when your account becomes ineligible for recommendation, and you can appeal (TikTok Support). |
| "There's no way to check." | Account check in TikTok Studio audits your account and your recent posts (TikTok Support). TikTok said at launch it covers your last 30 posts (TikTok Newsroom, April 2024). |
| "It lasts a set number of days." | TikTok doesn't publish a fixed length. It describes account-level ineligibility as temporary and says it may restore your account to good standing automatically (TikTok Support). |
So yes, restrictions are real. They're just not secret, and they're not the only reason views drop.
How to Check Officially (3 Places)
1. Account Check in TikTok Studio
From TikTok's support page (TikTok Support: Your account status):
- In the TikTok app, tap Profile at the bottom.
- Tap the Menu ☰ button at the top, then select TikTok Studio.
- Within More tools, tap Account check.
You can also get there through Settings and privacy → Support → Safety Center → Account check.
Start here. It's TikTok's own record of your account, which beats any guess you can make from a view count.
If there's no issue, you'll see a checkmark next to the feature or post. If there is an issue, you'll see a warning sign. Account check covers restrictions on logging in, posting, commenting, editing your profile and sending messages, plus the status of your posts.
2. Inbox and Profile Notices
If your whole account becomes ineligible for recommendation, TikTok says it tells you in your Inbox notifications. It also shows an Ineligible for recommendation notice below your username on your profile (TikTok Support). If there's no notice and Account check is clean, that tells you something too: TikTok isn't reporting a restriction on your account.
3. Your For You Traffic Share
In TikTok Studio analytics, each post shows its Traffic source: how viewers found it, with sources such as For You, Search and Personal profile (TikTok Creator Academy). Open a few recent posts and compare them with posts from before the drop. It's the quickest way to tell "not shown" from "shown and skipped":
- For You traffic is still there, but totals are smaller: TikTok is showing your posts, and viewers are moving on.
- For You traffic disappeared on posts Account check flagged: that matches a restriction.
What Your Result Means
| What you found | Reading |
|---|---|
| Account check shows a warning on your account or on posts, or you have an "Ineligible for recommendation" notice | Likely restriction. Go to the next section. |
| Account check is clean; one or two posts dipped while others performed normally | Likely normal fluctuation. Individual posts vary. Keep posting and compare your next 5-10 posts with the ones before the dip. |
| Account check is clean; posts still get For You traffic, but views, watch time and completion are down across the board | Likely content or retention issue. The first seconds aren't holding people. See "If Account check is clean". |
| New account, only a handful of posts, or you haven't opened Account check yet | Insufficient evidence. Run the checks above and post a few more times before drawing conclusions. A week of extra posts gives you something real to compare. |
Nobody outside TikTok can see its internal flags, so no website can confirm a restriction either way. These four readings are the most honest calls you can make from what TikTok shows you.
If It's a Likely Restriction: What to Do
- Open what was flagged. Account check shows a warning next to each affected post, and the ineligibility notice lets you review the flagged videos. Read the reason for each.
- Edit, delete or appeal. If a post breaks a rule you didn't know about, take it down. If you think TikTok got it wrong, appeal. That's what the button is for. From TikTok's support page: tap Inbox, tap the notification, tap View more, review the videos, then tap Appeal. Or tap Profile, tap the Ineligible for recommendation notice, review, and tap Appeal.
- Stop repeating the pattern. TikTok's newsroom says the account-level restriction applies when a creator repeatedly posts content that goes against its For You feed standards (TikTok Newsroom). Read the Community Guidelines section that matches your flag.
- Pre-check new posts so it doesn't happen again. TikTok introduced Content Check Lite in TikTok Studio on the web. It lets creators check whether content may be eligible for For You recommendation before uploading (TikTok Newsroom, July 2025).
TikTok also says it may restore your account automatically, depending on how much of your content isn't suitable for the For You feed (TikTok Support).
If Account Check Is Clean: It's Usually the First Seconds
If Account check is clean and your posts still get For You traffic, TikTok is showing your videos. People just aren't staying.
Open the retention graph for your last 3-5 posts. If viewers leave in the first two seconds, the opening is the problem:
- A first frame that doesn't show what the video is about.
- A first line that warms up instead of starting ("Hey guys, so...").
- A promise that's too vague to care about. "Some Etsy tips" gives nobody a reason to stay. "The Etsy setting that cost me my first ten sales" does.
Two ways to get your next post back on course:
- Diagnose the post with the Video Analyzer. Upload up to four screenshots of one TikTok's analytics and get a plain-language read of hook retention, reach and engagement: what worked, what hurt, what to change next. It works from screenshots, so there's no video upload and no account connection, and the free plan doesn't need a card.
- Rewrite the opening with the Hook Generator: three hooks for your topic, spoken or on-screen.

Things That Don't Fix It
Taking a 48 or 72-hour break. TikTok's support pages describe automatic restoration and appeals, not a posting pause that lifts a restriction. A break won't hurt, but it won't fix a flagged post either.
Clearing the cache or reinstalling the app. It can help with app glitches. It isn't part of how TikTok describes restoring recommendation eligibility.
Deleting all your videos. It feels like a clean start. It isn't. If a post was flagged, deal with that post. Wiping your profile also wipes the data you need to see what's working.
Banned hashtag lists. TikTok doesn't publish one in its support pages, and lists you find online can't be verified.
"Shadowban checker" sites. They can read public numbers like views and likes. They can't see TikTok's internal flags. Account check can.
How Long Does a TikTok Restriction Last?
TikTok doesn't publish a set duration. Its newsroom calls account-level ineligibility temporary. Its support page says it may restore your account to good standing automatically depending on how much of your content isn't suitable for the For You feed. If you think a decision is wrong, appeal instead of waiting it out.
FAQ
How long does a TikTok shadowban last?
TikTok doesn't publish a fixed duration. It describes account-level ineligibility as temporary and says it may restore your account automatically, depending on how much of your content isn't suitable for the For You feed. If you believe it's a mistake, appeal from the notice in your Inbox or on your profile.
How do I know if I'm shadowbanned on TikTok?
Check three things: Account check in TikTok Studio, any "Ineligible for recommendation" notice on your profile or in your Inbox, and the For You share in each post's traffic sources. A warning or notice means a likely restriction. A clean check with For You traffic still present points to a content or retention issue.
What can get you shadowbanned on TikTok?
TikTok's account-level restriction applies when a creator repeatedly posts content that goes against its For You feed standards. Individual posts can also be ineligible. The reason shows in Account check or the notice, and TikTok's Community Guidelines explain each rule.
How do I remove a shadowban on TikTok?
Open the flagged posts in Account check or from the notice, then edit or delete anything that breaks a rule, or appeal if you think TikTok made a mistake. TikTok may also restore your account automatically. Breaks, cache clears and hashtag tricks aren't part of TikTok's process.
Do TikTok shadowban checker websites work?
They can read public numbers, but they can't see TikTok's internal flags. Use Account check in TikTok Studio: it's TikTok's own view of your account and posts.
Will deleting my videos fix it?
Not by itself. Deal with the specific posts Account check flags. Deleting everything removes the history you need to see what's working and doesn't appear anywhere in TikTok's appeal process.
